This funky former sugarcane town on Maui's North Shore has serious character. Paia's colorful storefronts along Hana Highway house surf shops, art galleries, health food stores, and some of the island's best restaurants. The bohemian, surfer-artist vibe is the complete opposite of resort-y Wailea.
Paia is your last chance for real supplies before the Road to Hana, but don't just gas up and bolt. Walk the main drag, duck into the eclectic shops, and soak up the laid-back energy. This is one of Maui's most authentic communities — part hippie hangout, part surf town, all charm.
💡 Insider Tip
Hit Mana Foods for the best natural groceries on Maui before your Hana drive. Paia Bay Coffee serves excellent espresso, and the colorful Buddhist stupa at Maui Dharma Center on the east end is free and surprisingly peaceful.
