The secret beach that Maui locals protect fiercely. Po'olenalena (locals just call it "Poo-lay") is tucked away on Makena Alanui Road in South Maui, where most tourists drive right past because there are no signs and access points are hidden between mansions. This golden sand beach delivers what South Maui used to feel like - wide stretches, calm clear water perfect for swimming and snorkeling off the rocky points, and blissfully thin crowds. On weekdays you might share this gorgeous stretch with just a handful of families. The south end is more secluded, and there are actually some trees providing natural shade (rare for South Maui beaches). It's become a favorite spot for weddings and proposals thanks to those killer golden hour sunsets.
💡 Insider Tip
Two access points, but the second one further south leads to the quieter section - look for the blue 'shoreline access' sign between mansion driveways. Only a few shoulder parking spots available, so arrive before 10am. Bring your own water since there are just honey buckets, no facilities.
