This misty cloud forest at 6,200 feet on Haleakalā's slopes feels absolutely nothing like Hawaii — and that's exactly why it's magical. The Depression-era reforestation created this surreal landscape of towering redwoods, Monterey cypress, and cedar draped in moss and fog. It's eerily quiet, often empty, and feels like the Pacific Northwest teleported to Maui.
The Redwood Trail (just half a mile) is the crown jewel, winding through groves that shouldn't exist on a tropical island. Pack layers — temps hover around 50°F with frequent drizzle. The drive up Waipoli Road in Kula is half the adventure: paved switchbacks with killer isthmus views give way to dirt roads that climb through actual clouds. This is one of Maui's best-kept secrets in Upcountry.

Absolutely DO NOT attempt this without 4WD — the last stretch of Waipoli Road will destroy a sedan. Download maps beforehand (zero cell service), tell someone your plans, and dress for mountain weather. The trail intersections have maps, so snap photos.
