Ahihi-Kinau Natural Area Reserve Snorkeling

South Maui · Maui

This is hands-down one of Maui's best snorkeling spots, and the dramatic setting makes it unforgettable. You're literally swimming where Haleakala's last lava flow hit the ocean around 1790 — the stark black volcanic landscape creates an otherworldly backdrop. The water is incredibly clear with abundant marine life, including massive schools of yellow tang, eels, and octopus. Since it's a protected reserve with no fishing allowed, the fish are plentiful and surprisingly large. The entry over lava rocks into the small cove can be tricky, but once you're in, the visibility is amazing even on cloudy days. There's plenty of parking and it's less crowded than other South Maui snorkel spots.

💡 Insider Tip

Check Hawaii DLNR website before going — the reserve closes periodically for restoration. Morning visits are best before trade winds pick up. The lava rock entry is sharp so water shoes are essential.
