The Big Island's best snorkeling spot that doesn't require a boat. Richardson's on Kalanianaole Street in Hilo is a series of tide pools and protected coves carved into black lava rock, where green sea turtles practically swim right past you. Locals regularly spot 15+ turtles here, and the coral is actually alive (unlike some of Oahu's more touristy spots). The marine life is incredible — tropical fish dart through crystal-clear water that looks like an aquarium.
The beach is black sand mixed with smooth lava rocks, with giant ironwood trees providing shade and picnic areas. It's also perfect for beginner surfers with smaller, manageable waves. Fair warning: it gets absolutely packed during summer breaks and school holidays, so timing matters.
💡 Insider Tip
Bring water shoes — the lava rock is sharp. Best turtle spotting is in the far-left pond area. Go early morning before crowds arrive and wind picks up.
