Pacific Tsunami Museum

Hilo · Big Island

Housed in a restored 1930s bank building on Kamehameha Avenue in downtown Hilo, this small but powerful museum tells the story of the devastating 1946 and 1960 tsunamis that completely reshaped the town. The passionate volunteer docents — many of them actual tsunami survivors — give incredible presentations that bring the exhibits to life with personal stories you won't find anywhere else.

The museum does feel a bit dated and could use some updates, but the wealth of information and survivor testimonies make it essential for understanding why Hilo's waterfront looks the way it does today. Plan for about 45 minutes to see everything, including their well-made documentary film.

💡 Insider Tip

Don't miss the volunteer presentation at the beginning — docents like Tim and Randall are amazing storytellers who set up the whole experience perfectly. Note there are no bathrooms on-site, so plan accordingly.
