Kealakekua Bay at Captain Cook Monument is hands down the best snorkeling in Hawaii — crystal clear water, pristine coral, and marine life that'll blow your mind. Spinner dolphins are regulars here, and the vibrant tropical fish are incredible. The white monument marks where Captain James Cook met his end in 1779.
You've got three ways to get here: kayak across (my top pick), hike the steep 3.5-mile trail, or take a boat tour from Kailua-Kona. The boat tours are fantastic for first-timers — crews are patient and helpful, plus you'll likely spot dolphins on the ride. Just know you'll spend about an hour each way on the water, with roughly an hour of actual snorkel time.
💡 Insider Tip
Book morning boat tours — the crews are incredibly welcoming and patient with beginners, plus they often detour for dolphin sightings. The boats come stocked with snacks and drinks, making the hour-long ride each way totally worth it.
