Liliuokalani Gardens

Hilo · Big Island

The largest Japanese garden outside of Japan sits on 30 acres along Lihiwai Street in Hilo Bay. This Edo-style garden was created in 1917 to honor Japanese plantation workers, featuring stone bridges, pagodas, koi ponds, and majestic banyan trees that reviewers rave about. Walking the winding paths feels like pure meditation — one visitor called it "eden on earth."

The arched bridge to Coconut Island (Moku Ola) is Hilo's most photographed spot, though it's been under renovation recently due to collapse. Even without bridge access, there's plenty to explore among the perfectly manicured grounds. Keep an eye out for nene geese chilling around the ponds, and don't miss the occasional flower arrangement contests that happen here.

💡 Insider Tip

Go early morning when mist rises off the ponds for that dreamy Japanese painting effect. The gardens are gorgeous rain or shine, and you'll likely spot nene geese wandering the grounds — they're totally unbothered by visitors.
