Mauna Loa Lookout Road

Volcano · Big Island

This narrow, winding road climbs 11.5 miles from Highway 11 to 6,662 feet on Mauna Loa's shoulder — the world's largest active volcano. The drive passes through gorgeous Koa forest and multiple climate zones before reaching the lookout with its octagonal pavilion, clean bathrooms, and educational signs. On clear days, you'll get spectacular views of Kilauea caldera with steam rising and vistas stretching to the sea.

Most Big Island visitors skip this drive entirely, so you'll likely have it mostly to yourself. The road becomes one-lane partway up with rougher pavement near the top, but any 2WD vehicle can make it if you drive carefully. The air up here smells incredibly fresh, native birds are active in the forest, and it's the trailhead for serious hikers attempting the Mauna Loa summit trail.

💡 Insider Tip

Weather makes or breaks this drive — clouds and rain can completely block the views. The road becomes one-lane partway up, so drive defensively. Temperature drops significantly with elevation, so bring layers even on warm days.
