This spring-fed lagoon on Kalanianaole Street in Hilo is where locals go when they want perfect swimming conditions without fighting the rough surf. The mix of cold freshwater springs and warm ocean water creates this incredibly clear, protected pool where you can see every detail on the sandy bottom. Green sea turtles are practically residents here — they love hanging out near the rocky areas, and you'll almost certainly spot at least one during your visit.
The park has everything you need for a full day: grassy areas, pavilions, BBQ spots, and even a rope swing the kids (and adults) go crazy for. Water shoes are clutch here — the volcanic rock can be sharp, and there are some sea urchins in spots. The shallow areas on the right side are perfect for little ones, while the deeper sections give you room to actually swim and snorkel around the small coral formations.
💡 Insider Tip
Hit up the Walmart nearby for cheap water shoes before you go — the volcanic rock bottom can be rough on bare feet. Weekday mornings are quietest, and the turtles usually chill near the rocks on the right side.
