South Point (Ka Lae)

Kona Coast · Big Island

The southernmost point in the United States, where relentless wind meets dramatic 35-foot cliffs dropping into deep blue water. Ka Lae is where Polynesians first landed over 1,000 years ago — you can still see ancient canoe mooring holes carved into the rocks. The landscape feels powerfully remote, all windswept grassland and spinning wind turbines. Locals cliff jump here despite the warning signs, but accidents do happen and the metal ladder is broken/shortened, making it much harder to climb back up. Even if you don't jump, watching the action while local fishermen work their lines is entertainment enough. The drive through ranch country on South Point Road is half the experience.

💡 Insider Tip

The climbing ladder broke and no longer reaches the water properly — locals now have to scale rocks to get out. If you jump (experienced swimmers only), bring water shoes since your feet will be sore from the climb up.
