Called the 'Valley of the Kings,' this mile-wide valley on the Big Island's Hamakua Coast is pure magic — 2,000-foot cliffs plunge down to black sand beaches and twin waterfalls. Once the political center of old Hawaii, it's still home to taro farms and wild horses that make it feel completely untouched by time.
The lookout itself is stunning and free, offering one of the most photographed views on the island. That impossibly steep road down? It's 25% grade and absolutely requires 4WD — rental companies ban it, and for good reason. But honestly, the rim view might be better anyway.
💡 Insider Tip
Come in the morning for the best light and fewer crowds. Don't attempt the drive down in anything less than a proper 4WD truck — you'll damage your car and possibly yourself.
