A series of cascading waterfalls and natural pools carved into the rock at the mouth of Ohe'o Gulch in the Kipahulu District of Haleakala National Park. The pools staircase down to the ocean through lush tropical vegetation, creating one of Maui's most iconic landmarks along the Road to Hana.
Here's the reality: swimming has been prohibited since 2018 due to flash flood concerns, so come for the views and photo ops, not a dip. The short 10-minute walk from the visitor center is easy and rewarding, with black sand areas near the coast and mesmerizing ocean views. This is also your starting point for the epic Pipiwai Trail through the bamboo forest to Waimoku Falls — definitely do both in one visit.
💡 Insider Tip
Swimming is permanently closed as of 2018, despite what outdated guides say. The waterfalls are actually more impressive after heavy rains, just muddier. Consider the Kuloa Point loop trail as a less crowded alternative to Pipiwai.
