A 4-mile round-trip hike through one of Maui's most magical landscapes in Haleakala National Park's Kipahulu District, past Hana. The trail winds through dense bamboo forest on boardwalks — towering bamboo so thick it creaks in the wind — leading to the spectacular 400-foot Waimoku Falls. You'll pass Makahiku Falls overlook at 0.5 miles and a massive banyan tree before entering the bamboo cathedral around 1.25 miles in.
This is hands down the best waterfall hike on Maui. The bamboo section feels otherworldly, though some find the walk itself a bit monotonous until you reach that jaw-dropping finale. The 800-foot elevation gain is totally manageable for most people, including kids. Just know it's muddy and humid — this area gets rain almost daily, which keeps everything lush but slippery.
💡 Insider Tip
Start early to beat crowds and snag parking. Wear grippy hiking shoes you don't mind getting muddy — people slip constantly on the boardwalks. The visitor center has drinkable water, so no need to overpack. Budget 2-3 hours total.
