Iao Valley State Park

Central Maui · Maui

The Iao Needle — a 1,200-foot moss-covered spire jutting from the valley floor — is one of Maui's most jaw-dropping sights. The short paved trail in this lush Central Maui valley leads to killer viewpoints of the needle and West Maui Mountains, but the real magic happens when you venture off-trail to the stream below. You'll find beautiful pools perfect for cooling off and gorgeous river bends that most visitors miss.

This sacred site was also the scene of King Kamehameha I's brutal 1790 Battle of Kepaniwai. The combo of dramatic geology and heavy Hawaiian history makes this 4,000-acre Wailuku gem worth the $5 parking fee, even if you'll only need about an hour to see it all.

💡 Insider Tip

Hit it early morning before clouds swallow the needle. The real gem is stepping off the main trail to explore the stream — you'll find peaceful pools and way better photo ops than the crowded viewpoint.
