This hidden black sand beach along Makena Alanui Road is where Maui shows off its volcanic personality. The sand is actually more of a dark reddish-black mix that's coarse but comfortable underfoot, created by centuries of lava meeting ocean. It's a local favorite precisely because most tourists never find it — you'll see pickup trucks parked seaside and families claiming their spots for the day.
The rocky bottom and occasional rough surf make this better for exploring than swimming, but the snorkeling can be decent when conditions are calm. Tide pools along the shoreline are packed with small fish, crabs, and other marine life that kids love discovering. The backdrop of red lava cliffs slowly crumbling into the sea makes for dramatic photos, but don't attempt to climb them — the volcanic rock is razor-sharp and unstable.
💡 Insider Tip
Look for the dirt road turnoff on your right as you drive past Big Beach toward the end of Makena Alanui Road. There are about 10 parking spots right by the beach, but cars line the access road when it fills up. Check the gate hours posted at the entrance.
