Pu'ukohola Heiau National Historic Site

Kohala Coast · Big Island

The massive temple that King Kamehameha I built to fulfill a prophecy — that he would unite the Hawaiian Islands if he constructed a heiau dedicated to his war god. Completed in 1791 on Kawaihae Road in Waimea, this sacred site overlooks the ocean where Kamehameha's destiny unfolded. Within five years of its completion, he had conquered all of Hawaii.

Start with the epic 27-minute documentary in the visitor center — it's genuinely compelling and gives you the full backstory. The exhibits are incredible, with hands-on experiences like lifting the same massive stones workers passed in human chains to build this temple. You can even try traditional Hawaiian games like konane (Hawaiian checkers) and feel the weight of ancient spears. The temple itself is sacred, so you can't walk on it, but the views from the trail below are impressive.

💡 Insider Tip

Watch that 27-minute documentary first — it completely transforms your understanding of what you're seeing. The rangers here are passionate storytellers who really bring the history to life. Spencer Beach Park is next door for a post-history swim.
