Makalawena Beach

Kona Coast · Big Island

If you want a gorgeous, nearly empty Big Island beach and you're willing to work for it, Makalawena is your reward. This stretch of pristine white sand on the Kona Coast is only accessible by hiking across rough lava fields — no road, no facilities, no crowds. Just you, turquoise water, and maybe a green sea turtle or monk seal sunbathing on the sand.

The water is calm and perfect for swimming, plus there are two lava pools to explore. Large ironwood trees (not coconuts) provide some shade, and the whole scene feels like a private island. The trek makes it extra special — bring everything you need because there's literally nothing out there.

💡 Insider Tip

You can drive partway if you have a 4WD with high clearance and big tires, but most people park at Kekaha Kai State Park and walk the whole way. Either route takes 45-50 minutes. Flip flops work but closed-toe shoes are smarter on the lava.
