Pine Trees Surf Break

Kona Coast · Big Island

One of the Big Island's best surf spots in Kailua-Kona, accessed via a rough dirt road through kiawe forest. Pine Trees (named for the ironwood trees, not actual pines) has multiple breaks for different skill levels, and it's where Kona's surfing community congregates. The vibe is local and laid-back, but heads up — weekends turn into a massive local party scene with hundreds of tents, loud music, and traffic jams on that narrow access road.

Even if you don't surf, the white sand beach backed by lava and ironwood trees is gorgeous for sunset watching. Just know it's rocky with boulders, so not great for swimming. There are proper bathrooms and showers, which is rare for a 'hidden' spot.

💡 Insider Tip

Skip weekends unless you're into the party vibe — it gets absolutely packed with locals camping and playing music. Weekdays are much mellower. The road is rough but doable in a regular car if you go slow.
