Built on Kona's original airstrip along Kuakini Highway, this massive stretch of coastline is where locals go to escape the crowds. The old runway is now a perfect mile-long walking path (locals swear it's exactly a mile round-trip), while the rocky shoreline offers protected tide pools and decent snorkeling spots.
The tide pools at the north end are incredible for kids — warm, shallow, and packed with small fish and crabs. You'll find plenty of picnic pavilions with BBQ setups, though they fill up fast on weekends. Fair warning: the facilities are pretty basic (think portable toilets), but the outdoor showers work fine and there's tons of free parking.
💡 Insider Tip
Hit the north end tide pools early morning when it's nearly empty — the mile-long runway walk back to your car is the perfect cool-down. Weekends get busy fast, so snag a pavilion early or just bring a beach umbrella.
