The birthplace of the loco moco and still the best place to eat one on the Big Island. This walk-up window spot on Kilauea Avenue in Hilo has been serving locals since 1946, surviving two tsunamis and still going strong with 30+ loco moco variations. Order at the window, grab a picnic table under the covered outdoor area, and dig into authentic Hawaiian plate lunches that cost less than mainland fast food. The original loco moco is perfection — tender handmade patty (not some frozen commercial thing), rich beefy gravy, and perfectly runny egg over rice. Don't miss their rotating specials like kalua cabbage and lau lau.
💡 Insider Tip
Stick with the original loco moco — it's what they're famous for. Ask for extra gravy (they're generous). Check what specials are available since they rotate. No bathrooms, so plan accordingly.
