Mauna Kea Summit Stargazing

Waimea · Big Island

Standing at 13,796 feet above sea level on Mauna Kea Access Road, this is hands-down one of the most otherworldly experiences on the Big Island. The summit feels like you're literally on another planet — with 13 massive working telescopes and views above the clouds that'll mess with your head in the best way. The free stargazing program at the Visitor Information Station (9,200 ft) runs nightly with telescopes and guides, or drive to the summit for sunset if you've got 4WD. Fair warning: the altitude hits different up here, and it's legitimately freezing even when Kona's sweltering.

💡 Insider Tip

Seriously consider altitude sickness meds if you're sensitive — multiple visitors mentioned regretting not bringing them. And when locals say "dress like you're skiing," they mean it. Pack your full winter gear even in summer.
