Mauna Lani Beach (Beach 69)

Kohala Coast · Big Island

Known locally as Beach 69 (named after the old telephone pole marker), this white sand gem on the Kohala Coast is one of those spots that feels like a well-kept secret. The kiawe trees provide rare natural shade, though watch for thorns that'll punch right through flip-flops. What makes this place special is the incredibly clear water and abundant sea life — yellow tangs, eels, crabs, and if you're lucky, grazing sea turtles in the shallows. The protected cove keeps waters calm, making it perfect for beginner snorkelers and families. Access is through Kalāhuipua'a Historic Park with a 10-12 minute walk to the beach, which keeps crowds manageable even on weekends.

💡 Insider Tip

Come early to snag parking at Kalāhuipua'a Historic Park. The walk is longer than most Big Island beaches but keeps the crowds thin. Bring reef-safe booties for the kiawe thorns and snorkel gear — the fish are so abundant you'll barely want to surface.
