This 442-foot waterfall plunging into a lush gorge is one of Big Island's most spectacular sights, and the easy 0.4-mile paved loop trail makes it accessible to pretty much everyone. You'll also catch Kahuna Falls, a 100-foot cascade that's almost as impressive as the main event.
The real magic happens on the trail itself — this isn't just a waterfall hike, it's like walking through a living botanical garden. Giant philodendrons, wild orchids, bamboo groves, and dripping ferns create this primeval jungle vibe that feels completely otherworldly. Fair warning: there are lots of stairs along the way, so come prepared for some ups and downs. The whole loop takes 30-60 minutes depending on how much time you spend gawking at the incredible plant life.
💡 Insider Tip
Park along the roadside just outside the entrance to skip the $5 parking fee — locals do this all the time. Visit after rain for the most dramatic waterfall flow, just expect some mist at the viewpoint.
