Standing above the sunken USS Arizona on Ford Island is one of the most profound experiences in Hawaii. The white memorial straddles the battleship's hull, and you can still see oil bubbling up — those 'black tears' — 80+ years later. The museum and film provide essential context before the boat ride out.
This isn't a 'fun' tourist stop, but an essential one. Even when 30mph winds cancel memorial landings (you can return another day for free), the boat ride and moment of silence are deeply moving. The grounds alone — with multiple battleship monuments and walls of names — will leave you changed. Budget at least 3-4 hours and go with the right mindset.
💡 Insider Tip
Book free Arizona tickets at recreation.gov 2+ weeks ahead. Can't get tickets? Try the 7am standby line. No bags allowed (pay lockers available), arrive 30 min early, and parking costs extra. The plumeria flowers at the memorial are for dropping in the water.
