Byodo-In Temple Visit

Windward · Oahu

This stunning replica of a 900-year-old Japanese Buddhist temple sits dramatically at the base of the Ko'olau Mountains on Kahekili Highway in Kaneohe. The sacred bon-sho bell really does bring that sense of peace everyone talks about — ring it before entering to follow tradition. Inside the temple, you'll need to remove your shoes to see the magnificent nine-foot golden Amida Buddha statue up close.

The koi pond is absolutely magical — some of these fish are decades old and will literally jump over each other for the $2 fish food from the gift shop. Wild peacocks roam the manicured grounds, and yes, they're as surreal as they sound. The whole experience feels like stepping into ancient Japan, with those towering Ko'olau cliffs reflected in the water. It's genuinely one of Oahu's most serene spots.

💡 Insider Tip

Arrive right at 8:30am to beat the tour buses and get the clearest mountain backdrop photos — afternoon clouds roll in and kill the dramatic cliff views. The birds will literally eat from your hand if you buy the fish food.
