Kapiolani Park

Waikiki's massive backyard — 300 acres of green space on Paki Avenue that most tourists walk right past on their way to the beach. This oceanfront park at the base of Diamond Head hosts the Honolulu Zoo, Waikiki Shell amphitheater, and the best people-watching lawn in Oahu. On weekends, local families picnic under banyan trees, groups play soccer and volleyball, and you'll spot an incredible variety of unique trees and tropical birds.

The art fence along Monsarrat Avenue displays original paintings and photographs by local artists every weekend — it's an open-air gallery where you can meet creators and buy directly. Don't miss the sunset views and free Kapiolani Bandstand concerts. Fair warning: there's a visible homeless population, but reviewers consistently say they're respectful and non-intrusive.
