This is literally where the road ends in South Maui — and where Maui gets real. You'll drive through increasingly wild terrain until you hit a vast black lava field from Haleakala's last eruption around 1790. The contrast is stunning: jet-black volcanic rock meeting turquoise water, with Kahoolawe floating in the distance. The ancient King's Highway trail winds along the rugged coastline for about four miles, passing through areas where you'll spot wild goats and maybe spinner dolphins in the morning hours. The snorkeling can be incredible in calm conditions, and you'll likely see sea turtles. This is raw, unfiltered Maui — no resorts, no amenities, just volcanic drama and ocean views.
💡 Insider Tip
Get here by 10am for dolphins, and definitely wear closed-toe shoes — the lava rock is wickedly sharp. Bring way more water than you think you need since there's zero shade on most of the trail.
