Ho'okipa is the world capital of windsurfing, and watching from the bluff on Hana Highway in Paia is one of the best free shows on Maui. On any given afternoon, you'll see pro-level windsurfers and kitesurfers launching off massive waves – we're talking 15-footers that'll make your jaw drop. The parking lots are tiered right above the action, so you can watch comfortably from your car or walk to the cliff edge.
But here's the real magic: this is also where 50-60 sea turtles haul out to nap on the eastern end of the beach in late afternoon. The combo of world-class athletes shredding waves while turtles sunbathe below is pure Maui gold. Just remember this is a viewing spot – the beach itself is for serious surfers only, not casual swimming.
💡 Insider Tip
Get there by 2pm to snag parking before the sunset crowd hits – it gets absolutely packed later. The turtles usually show up around 3-4pm on the east end, and bring binoculars to really appreciate the windsurfers' tricks.
