The Big Island's most family-friendly beach on the Kohala Coast, hands down. Spencer has calm, shallow water protected by a reef, soft white sand, picnic pavilions, BBQ grills, restrooms, showers, and big shade trees. It's where local families spend their weekends — you'll see outrigger canoe groups practicing and kids fishing off the rocks.
Right next door is Pu'ukohola Heiau National Historic Site, a massive Hawaiian temple built by King Kamehameha I. Beach time plus history — not a bad combo. Fair warning: this isn't a snorkeling spot (poor visibility), and weekends can get absolutely packed with local events.
💡 Insider Tip
Weekends here can be crazy busy with family gatherings and events — if you want space to breathe, come on a weekday. The camping spots right on the beach are primo, but you need a county permit booked online ahead of time.
