Paddle a kayak from Kailua Beach across a mile of turquoise water to the twin Mokulua Islands — volcanic islets that look straight out of a fantasy movie. The 30-45 minute paddle each way is a moderate workout, but landing on Moku Nui's small beach is incredibly rewarding. You'll find tide pools to explore and stunning views back toward the Ko'olau Mountains. Several shops on Kailua Road rent kayaks, or join a guided tour where you might spot monk seals sunning on the beach and green sea turtles while snorkeling. The longer 5-hour guided tours include snorkeling gear and let you explore both islands with knowledgeable local guides.
💡 Insider Tip
Go early morning when trade winds are calmest — afternoon winds make paddling back brutal. Only Moku Nui allows landing; the smaller Moku Iki is a protected bird sanctuary.
