One of the most beautiful small art museums in America, and criminally overlooked by tourists. The museum on South Beretania Street in downtown Honolulu is built around gorgeous open-air courtyards with fountains and gardens that'll make you forget you're in a museum. The collection spans 5,000 years with works by Picasso, Monet, van Gogh, and Hokusai, plus an exceptional Asian art collection. The 1927 Hawaiian-Mediterranean building with its thick walls and shaded courtyards is as much art as what's hanging inside. Plan 2-3 hours to properly appreciate everything — this is high culture in tropical paradise, and the thoughtful curation includes honest backstories about race and culture that most museums skip.
💡 Insider Tip
Free admission first Wednesday and third Sunday each month. The courtyard cafe often has live jazz and serves excellent coffee and sorbet. Don't miss the Hokusai prints and Korean ceramics — they're world-class.
