Highway Inn

Downtown Honolulu · Oahu

Traditional Hawaiian food done right at this family-run spot that's been serving locals since 1947. Their Kaka'ako location on Ala Moana Boulevard makes authentic Hawaiian cuisine accessible — the kalua pig is impossibly juicy, the laulau tender and smoky, and they explain every dish for newcomers. Don't miss the mochiko chicken (crispy perfection) or their famous poi mochi donuts.

This is where you go for working-class Hawaiian flavors without the tourist markup. The combo plates are massive — most people can't finish them — and the staff is genuinely welcoming. Fair warning: service can be slow and forgetful during busy times, but the food makes up for it. Best introduction to real Hawaiian food on Oahu.

💡 Insider Tip

Get the combo plate to try multiple dishes — the kalua pig is ridiculously juicy. Parking is free for 90 minutes in their strip mall lot. Service can be slow, so don't come if you're in a rush.
