Diamond Head Summit Trail

Waikiki · Oahu

Hawaii's most iconic hike — a short but steep trek through the volcanic crater of Leahi (Diamond Head) to the 760-foot summit. The 360-degree views from the top are absolutely stunning: all of Waikiki, Honolulu's coastline, and the deep blue Pacific stretching to the horizon.

The 1.6-mile round trip trail starts paved and well-maintained, then gets more challenging with uneven terrain, a dark tunnel, and steep stairs near the summit. It's not technically difficult, but those stairs will get your heart pumping — plan on 30-40 minutes up if you're moving steadily, or an hour if you're stopping for photos. Don't underestimate it though; you need to be reasonably fit and mobile.

💡 Insider Tip

Book your $5 reservation online in advance — time slots fill up fast, especially weekends. Go at 6am for sunrise magic and cooler temps. Your phone flashlight works fine for the tunnel, and take the #2 bus from Waikiki to avoid the parking hassle.
