This sacred Big Island landmark on State Highway 160 near Hōnaunau is one of those rare places that actually lives up to its significance. In ancient Hawaii, anyone who broke kapu (sacred law) could find sanctuary here and be absolved — if they made it alive. The massive stone wall, reconstructed temple platforms, and carved wooden ki'i guardian figures are genuinely powerful, especially as daylight fades and they seem to loom out of the darkness.
The Royal Grounds showcase ancient fishponds, canoe landings, and temple areas that paint a vivid picture of pre-contact Hawaiian society. Rangers give outstanding cultural talks that are absolutely worth timing your visit around. After exploring this Kona Coast historical park, you're literally next door to Two Step's excellent snorkeling — the perfect combination of culture and ocean time.
💡 Insider Tip
Visit in the evening for an unexpectedly moving experience as the carved figures become more dramatic in low light. The ranger talks (usually 10:30 AM and 2:30 PM) are exceptional. Consider the tri-park pass if you're hitting multiple Big Island national sites.
